Johnny Sexton thumb injury puts first game in doubt

Johnny Sexton is a doubt for Ireland’s first warm-up game for the Rugby World Cup due to a thumb injury.

It’s reported in the Independent that Sexton has dislocated his thumb and faces six weeks recovery which means it will be very tight for him to start the opening World Cup warm-up game against Italy at the Aviva Stadium on August 10.
With four players looking to fill three positions on the plane to Japan, this will be a great chance for Carberry, Carthy and Byrne to impress Ireland coach Joe Schmidt.
The Irish team are in Galway this week for an open training session on Friday, afterwards, there will be a full update on the squad which should give us a clearer picture of when Sexton will be back fit.
